Food Security
Did you know that Singapore imports over 90% of our food from over 160 countries?
Singapore is highly reliant on imports from other countries to meet our current demands for food. While our food sources are well diversified, it can still be affected by market supply disruptions. The Economist Intelligence Unit has highlighted climate change and natural resource risks as the key threats to Singapore’s food security. Bearing these impending threats in mind, there is a need to increase Singapore’s self-sufficiency in food provision to safeguard our quality of life. Strengthening self-sufficiency by producing our own food allows us to be more resilient in the face of supply hits on our food imports and reduces our heavy reliance on market forces and global trends for the assurance of our food supply.
Self-sufficiency
Local production is a core component of Singapore’s food security roadmap. With a population that is projected to reach 6.9 million by 2030, it is imperative that we utilise our limited land in the most efficient way possible. Tapping on under-utilised spaces like rooftops and exploiting technological innovations in urban farming can further augment our food security.
